Bury St Edmunds Town Centre Masterplan
Bury St Edmunds Town Centre Masterplan

BTT has been represented by John Popham on West Suffolk Council’s Town Centre Masterplan Group from its inception. Following the adoption of the completed Masterplan in January 2018, the council worked on delivering the plan’s objectives. Foremost amongst these was the redevelopment of the former Post Office site (17-18 Cornhill) in which BTT was actively involved from the summer of 2016 before the property came on the market and was subsequently acquired by the Council. At this early stage the Trust produced plans and a brief for the redevelopment of the site which involved retaining the Post Office façade and widening Cornhill Walk – a feature that was incorporated into the competition winning scheme that also has a visually engaging elevation onto St Andrews St South linking it with the Arc. The project received planning approval in July 2020.

The development has two retails units and eleven flats above. Tenders for the work came in significantly above budget but BTT, Bury Town Council and the Bury Society, insisted that the scheme retained its original identity. The finished scheme greatly enhances the area and improves access between marketplace and the arc.
